Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need a Tutoring Program?

The program is a result of discussions of the School Improvement Committee of 2009-2010.  Less than half of students take advantage of before or after school assistance from teachers, have parents help them with homework, or take materials home to study or review the night that they do not have assigned homework.

The SIP Committee decided on the following target goals:

1)  Use lunch time as tutoring time.  Train students and those with tutor passes go to the front of the lunch line and take lunches to the tutoring area.

2)  Have a faculty member in charge of the tutoring room to coordinate tutoring and make-up work/tests.

How will the Homework Depot Tutoring Program operate?

Tutoring will be offered every day during Period 5, lunch periods and Wednesdays from 2:45 - 3:30 PM. Tutoring will begin August 30, 2010 and continue through the end of the school year. Students and Coaches would be able to get their lunches first and sign out of the cafeteria. They would go to Room 402 and sign in. The students will work with the Student Coaches while eating their lunch. Students and tutors are not allowed to leave the room until the end of the lunch period. There are restrooms and drinking fountains available in the area. The students will have access to the computers and internet.

Students are welcome to fill out the application for academic assistance, but it is not required to receive help. The students can come during the lunch period or after school any time that they need help. If there is a specific subject that the student needs assistance in, we can arrange to have a Comet Student Coach that specializes in that area present. This is also an opportunity for students to make up a test and work on absent or make-up work.  We encourage students to come in during a Homework Depot session any time! There is an open invitation!

A student can become a Comet Student Coach by applying, being accepted, and participating in an orientation to tutoring. The Student Coaches will earn community service hours for their National Honors Society applications, be acknowledged at the Academic Awards, and be able to put their experience on resumes and college applications.
